Catherine falls at first hurdle

CATHERINE Roberts, the leading qualifier, was denied a third successive title when she fell at the first matchplay hurdle in the Lancashire Ladies’ County Championship at Clitheroe.

The Pleasington member succumbed 3&2 against Rossendale’s Cori Lee on a day of keenly-fought competitions involving five of the eight county players.

In the second round, host club hope Sophie Lamb  had to go to the 19th before beating Eloise Healey, her fellow teenager and England squad member from West Lancs, in an exciting game of high quality golf.

Cori, Brogan Townend (Pleasington) and Hollie Muse (West Lancs) had comfortable wins to reach today’s semi-finals.

In the Plate section. most of the qualifiers were County B team players but it also includes Laura Johnson (Bolton Old Links), Nikki Foster (Accrington) and Sophie Powell (Manchester) who have all played in the A team.

Their class shone through as they all won twice to win a place in the semi-finals with Lauren Oakley (Blackpool Park).
