CONFIDENT: Paul Williams

They travel to Selby on Saturday to take on Roses rivals Yorkshire in the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League.

Then next Wednesday they cross the Pennines again to Ganton for the English English Men’s County Championship qualifying round which they have won five times in the last six years.

Lancashire also triumphed in the final at Gloucestershire club Minchinhampton last autumn and for the third occasion over the same period.

Skipper Paul Williams has assembled a strong six-man team which includes internationals Paul Howard, Paul Kinnear and Haydn McCullen.

And with Mark Young, who captured his third county championship crown at Grange Park at the weekend, and Jonathan Hurst and Sean Towndrow both in fine form, he’s confident of finishing northern group winners again.

“Howard, Kinnear and McCullen are playing in the Scottish Strokeplay Championship at Panmure this weekend so will miss the league match but thankfully they’re available for Ganton,” he said.

“We could not have chosen a better side. We have a great set of lads who all support each other so expectations are high.”

Williams, in his second season at the helm and having guided the Red Rose men to a clean sweep of titles last year, admitted that he was disappointed not have all his key players for the Selby match.

“It’s unfortunate that it coincides with the Scottish event but with so much going on it’s becoming increasingly difficult to avoid such clashes.”

He’s brought in Childwall’s Paul McFerran after a four-year absence and handed debuts to Formby’s Mark Duncalf and promising Nelson youngster Curtis Clarkin.
