Northern lights ready to switch on

FOUR PGA Professionals from the north of England will aim to shine next week when they take on some of golf’s biggest names in the prestigious ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors’ Championship.

Stephen McNally (Sunderland Golf Centre), Graeme Bell (Eaglescliffe), Paul Walker (Knott End) and Brian Sharrock (Hillside) will be up against a host of star players including former Ryder Cup captains Sam Torrance and Mark James and numerous past Ryder Cup players as they tee up in the £235,000 tournament at Stoke by Nayland on June 5-8.

The quartet from the PGA in England & Wales (North) all qualified thanks to a top 20 finish in the recent Senior PGA Professional Championship at Foxhills Resort, Surrey.

But the man to beat will be Paul Wesselingh, the former Chorley and Northenden pro and the reigning European Senior Tour No.1. He is seeking a third straight triumph in the event which returns to the Suffolk venue for a third time having previously hosted it in 2006 and 2007 when Sam Torrance and Carl Mason won respectively.

Previous champions of the European Senior Tour’s oldest tournament include Open winners Max Faulkner, Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson, while Christy O’Connor lifted the PGA Seniors’ trophy no less than six times.
