Lancs lass Gemma bowls ’em over at Gullane

FAIRHAVEN’S Gemma Batty is the surprise winner of the Mackie Bowl, Scottish Ladies’ Golf Association. 36-hole Order of Merit tournament over the Gullane No 1 course.

Scratch player Gemma, 20, moved to Powfoot on the Solway Firth three weeks ago and lost to Rachel Walker in the Dumfries-shire county final earlier this month.

But she atoned for that at Gullane with rounds of 72 and 73 for an aggregate of three-under-par  which gave her a six-stroke winning margin over Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies), the former Scottish U18 girls match-play champion.

Gemma’s family have been going to North Berwick on holiday for years  and she knows the courses in the area well, but, prior to yesterday had not played Gullane No 1, which makes her victory all the more praiseworthy.
