Lancs can still claim title – Williams

LANCASHIRE captain Paul Williams believes his side can retain the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League title despite the odds being tilted slightly in Yorkshire’s favour.

The sides are level on points going into the final fixtures on Saturday which see Lancashire facing a strong Cumbria outfit at Furness and Yorkshire making the trip to Newbiggin to take on bottom of the table Northumberland.

Williams observed: “It’s strange that the final encounter of the War of the Roses will be decided outside each respective county.

“Twice this year Yorkshire have delivered a blow on home turf to ruffle us but ever defiant we still have an opportunity to outflank them.”

Lancashire will field their strongest available team, recalling Manchester’s Joe Brice based on his impressive performance in the Lee Westwood trophy at Rotherham followed by a brilliant exhibition of stroke play in winning the Spencer Trophy at Fleetwood last weekend with a nine-under-par two round total.

England player Paul Kinnear was runner-up in that event and the Formby man will be in the thick of the action at Furness.

Williams added: “The foursomes have been our nemesis this year and hopefully the boys can take up the fight in the early laps.

“We don’t want to rely on what’s happening elsewhere, the league is ours to take, so let’s hope we can enjoy the Cumbrian landscape and ruffle the white flower once more.”

LANCASHIRE: Mark Young (Longridge), Paul Kinnear (Fleetwood), Sean Towndrow (S&A), Sean Blinkhorn (S&A), Louis Tomlinson (West Lancs), Ciaran Doherty (Bury), Henry Tomlinson (Royal Lytham), Curtis Clarkin (Nelson), Paul McFerran (Childwall), Joe Brice (Manchester), Richie Blundell (Hillside), John Carroll (Huyton & Prescot).
