Pike Fold are senior champs

PIKE Fold won the inaugural Manchester Alliance Seniors’ Team Championship after beating Lymm by 3.5-1.5 at Hopwood Cottage.

The organisers were delighted with the response to the competition which had been suggested to them by Manchester GC past captain Ken Stafford.

The better-ball match-play format of five pairs per side proved to very popular with 59 clubs which entered.

Pike Fold and Lymm had battled their way through five rounds to reach the final and were delighted to reach this stage and play on such a high-quality course.

Ken Stafford was on hand to present the trophies to each team and along with Alliance officials was delighted to say that his club would host the final in the coming years.

Alliance secretary Doug Craig said: “We were very happy that so many clubs entered the inaugural competition to make it such an outstanding success and we anticipate that the entries will increase to 90 for the 2015 competition.

“Manchester were outstanding hosts and the final was played in tremendous sporting spirit typifying our motto of ‘Friendship through Golf’

In the final Lymm took an early lead with a 5/4 win for their opening pair but Pike Fold came back strongly to win by two points.

Scores: Pike Fold first: L Sher and L Firth lost 5/4 to C Ashton and A Hill; J Parkinson and A Mumford beat I Hebenton and J Longworth 5/4; R Monaghan and T Gorman beat D Heaphy and W Paskins 1 up; L O’Hagan and D Wilcock halved with B Jones and K Edwards; N Bannister and D Brown beat R Shaw and K Barnes 2/1.
