Young hits the mark again

MARK Young won the Bolton Old Links Trophy for the third time in four years and kept alive his hopes on a record sixth Cleveland Srixon Northern Order of Merit title.

The Lancashire champion from Longridge scored a pair of 69s for a six-under-par total total to beat his county team-mate and merit leader Ciaran Doherty, from Bury, by two shots.

Young, who is planning to turn professional before the end of the year, picked up three birdies in a flawless first round and five in the next which included a brace of bogeys.

But with two events left, Doherty is still favourite to claim the merit crown.
