Seventh heaven as four share lead

BIRDIES flew in thick and fast in the first round of the PGA North Carus Green Cumbria Open at the Kendal club.

Four players will go into the last day tied on seven-under-par 64 – including the irrepressible David Shacklady who is bidding to retain his Michael Slater Order of Merit crown.

The Mossock Hall man opened with five straight pars but it was a bogey that the 318-yard sixth that stirred him into action.

He birdied the next three holes and repeated the act on the last three, picking up eight all told.

His score was matched by Swinton Park’s David Smith, Bedlingtonshire’s Mathew Webb and former PGA North Region champion Michael Jones, from Royal Liverpool.
