The 19-year-old held his nerve on the final round of the 72-hole competition at Pannal in a thrilling encounter decided on the final hole.

Chapman needed a par to secure victory and a precise iron shot from the tee set up a simple pitch to six feet.

He had started the afternoon with a four-stroke margin over nearest challenger Bower, but bogeys on the third and fourth saw the Yorkshireman, from Meltham Golf Club, quickly close the gap to one.

Chapman’s fine birdie on the sixth calmed the nerves and he dug in playing steadily until a drive into the trees on the short par four 14th saw him drop a further shot. The setback proved an inspiration as he birdied the next two holes before dropping another stroke at the 17th.  His par on the last saw him finish the round at one over 73.

Chapman, who has set his sights on Walker Cup selection next season, put himself in pole position from the start with a seven under 65 followed by two 69s.

“I’ve played nicely and hit the ball well but I’ve had a bit of luck too with some good lies and bounces. I played with a new putter and that seemed to work well,” he said.

Lifting the Shaw Plate was the second time Chapman has tasted victory at the famous Yorkshire course this season – in July he won the Pannal Rose Bowl by six shots.

There was more to celebrate for Cumbria – it lifted the County Plate for securing the best score after 36 holes by two members of the squad – Chapman and teamate Ryan Pearson from Workington. In the second round Wil Marklew of Furness provided the icing on the cake with a hole in one at the 215 yard 15th.

The championship, launched in 2013, was organised by the Northern Counties Golf Union.

It is also a World Amateur Golf and England Golf U ranking event.

It year it attracted a full field of 107 top players with an average handicap of +1.2 from 25 counties.
