Northenden fights back after fire

NORTHENDEN  is to remain in existence despite a huge fire two weeks ago that completely destroyed its 100-year-old clubhouse.

The fire, which was tackled by 20 firefighters over the course of several hours, caused so much damage that building inspectors branded the building unsafe and the property has already been pulled down.

Five nearby golf clubs, Withington, Didsbury, Chorlton, Reddish Vale and Sale, have offered Northenden members free use of their facilities until the club is back on its feet, while IT firm Club Systems has donated equipment to use in a temporary office.

Northenden also hopes to re-open its course imminently – as soon as investigators have finished their work at the scene and found a cause for the fire.

Club captain Larry McDonald said: “We’ve received tremendous offers of support and the entire golfing community has really rallied around us, which is not unexpected, but still very touching.

“We’re still dealing with the initial shock but we want to get going again as soon as possible.

“It’s sad to see what’s happened to the building, but the most important thing for us is that no-one was hurt – everything else we can put right.

“Our members will be able to use the other courses until ours is open and after that they will still be able to use our course and have a shower or a change or borrow golf clubs from the other clubs.”
