Tony’s all ‘fired up’ for new role

TONY McMunn always had a burning ambition to play golf – but was often stymied by his job in the fire service.

That took him all over Lancashire, Gloucestershire and Kent before retiring as a deputy chief fire Officer in Hereford and Worcester.

And when Manchester-born McMunn moved back to Preston he wasted no time in joining Ashton & Lea Golf Club with his wife Jane.

Fast forward to today and you’ll find him preparing for his biggest role in the game – President of the Lancashire Union of Golf Club, succeeding David Eccleston next March.

McMunn has served on the Lancashire Executive since 2003 and has acted as championship chairman for four years and holds a similar position on the county members’ committee.

He said: “It has given me a tremendous insight into the management of golf at county level.  We have highly successful teams at all levels and I also believe that the Lancashire County Golf Partnership will help clubs during these difficult times in retaining and recruiting new members.”

McMunn, a Preston magistrate and former president of the National Association of Fire Officers, joined Lancaster Golf Club in 2011.

A qualified England County referee, he is a member of the Lancashire junior and SSS committees.

He added: “Because of my background and qualifications I also became the LUGC safety adviser. I wrote and implemented the safety policy and procedure and I carry out course safety Inspections before all championships and county member events.

His wife Jane was Lancashire Ladies County GA captain in 2013. They have a son, daughter, four grandchildren (one who served in Afghanistan) and a great grandson.
