Lancashire lads to the four!

LANCASHIRE will again be favourites when they pursue their fourth consecutive Four Counties Junior Tournament title at Wallasey next week.

They face Nottinghamshire, Shropshire & Herefordshire and Cheshire in the series of round-robin matches on April 7-9.

Cheshire lost to their neighbours on a countback last year and will be hoping home advantage will help to atone for the disappointment.

But the Red Rose team, led by Hillside’s Oliver Clarke, the reigning county boy champion and England Boys’ squad player, look a formidable force.

Their line-up includes James Broadbent, Michael Tunstall and Callum Blinkhorn who featured in a dramatic finish at Nottingham club Wollaton.

Broadbent and Blinkhorn both won their final matches on their debuts and Tunstall gained a crucial half for the side that included Haydn McCullen who has since turned professional.

Lancashire have won the trophy on 12 occasions since the tournament was instigated in 1973 at Nottinghamshire club Hollinwell.

Past players include Sandy Lyle, Ian Woosnam, Nick Dougherty, Jamie Donaldson, Paul Waring and David Horsey.

LANCS: Oliver Clarke (Hillside), James Broadbent (St Annes Old Links), Callum McPhillips (Formby),  Matthew Nuttall (Royal Birkdale), Adam Clarke (Formby), Michael Tunstall (Bolton Old Links), Callum Blinkhorn (Southport & Ainsdale), Declan Illingsworth (Formby).
