Lancs lads go down fighting

LANCASHIRE finished second best in the Four Counties Junior Tournament at Wallasey as Nottinghamshire, wooden spoonists last year, beat them by one and a half points in the overall reckoning.

The Red Rose boys, seeking their fourth consecutive victory, looked likely to achieve the target until Shropshire and Herefordshire defied the odds by overcoming them by two points in the third and final round.

First up on the opening day for Lancashire were Nottinghamshire, a much improved team on previous years. A 4.5-2.5 win did not reflect how close all the matches were, with some great finishes under pressure from the Lancashire players.

Lancashire were three down in the first two matches after a few holes and two down in the third against hosts Cheshire, but they dug deep to prevail 4&3. Oliver Clarke, in the first match, was behind all the way until the 17 before winning on the last.

On day two Lancashire faced Shropshire & Herefordshire, who had lost their previous two matches 5-2.

But form and expectation were overturned and Lancashire ran out losers 4.5-2.5.

And with Cheshire also losing to Nottinghamshire, this left two teams level on match points so the result went to game points with the latter getting the verdict.
