Just champion as Abbie claims Cheshire title

ABBIE Cowlard, who plans to turn professional in September, captured the Cheshire Women’s County Championship crown after a close encounter with rising star Poppy Finlay at Delamere Forest.

The Stockport player beat her young rival from Vicars Cross 2&1  and earned the right to lead out the team in the North Region County Match Week at Sandiway on June 22-26.

Poppy, who headed the 36-hole qualifier, overcame Styal’s Charlotte Leathem by one hole in the semi-finals.

And Abbie, who carded a 67 in the second round, despatched host play player Olivia Lowe 4&3.

Poppy won the Doris Brown Trophy and President’s Prize as the

leading qualifier and the Intermediate Championship Trophy.

Abbie also took the Millennium Intermediate Scratch Trophy and the handicap prize.

And the Sir William Bailey Cup, for players who exited round one, went to Jeanne Bell (Royal Liverpool) who beat Tiffany Fielden (Hale).
