Kinnear cashes in on Lancs day off

PAUL Kinnear won the Henriques Trophy at Hesketh on the day his Lancashire team-mates drew their opening Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League match against Yorkshire at nearby Hillside.

The England player from Formby was omitted from the Red Rose side because he had been expecting to be called up for international duty.

But when he was told he was not required Lancashire had already named their team.

County captain Paul Williams said: “There was no way I could change my selection. It would not have been fair to tell one of our players to stand down.”

Kinnear, who strung together rounds of 73 and 68 for a one-under-par total to prevail by a shot from Wigan’s Reece Cranfield, moved to the top of the Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit alongside Dominic Barnes, from Caldy.
