Extra special Beesley is champion again

JON Beesley retained the Cheshire County Matchplay Championship after an enthralling battle with Stockport teenager Curtis Brokenbrow who took him to the first extra hole.

The former professional from Mere also needed to two additional holes to beat High Legh Park’s Chris Chilton in the first round.

But he then sailed into the final with comfortable victories, eclipsing Macclesfield’s Josh Crumplin 7&6 in the semis.

Brokenbrow booked his place by dispatching Royal Liverpool’s Matthew Jordan by one hole.

Meanwhile, the event attracted a disappointing field of 42 which was attributed to several players opting to compete in the Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit fixtures at Southport & Ainsdale and Formby which counted for World Amateur Golf Ranking points.

County secretary Stephen Foster said: “I understand the wishes of individuals wanting to play in events like these, but this is a long-standing  championship. I strongly believe all Cheshire players should support.”
