Kinnear leads Open regional qualifiers

THREE Lancashire County players wedged a foot in the Open Championship door when they cleared the regional qualifying hurdle at West Lancs.

And that’s precisely the number who will peg up at St Andrews next month with the exempt players if they pass the final qualifying test at Glasgow Gailes next Tuesday.

The Blundellsands hopefuls were led by Formby’s England international Paul Kinnear, leader of the Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit, who finished top of the pile with a one-over-par 73.

Two shots behind him were Southport & Ainsdale’s Sean Blinkhorn and host club player James Rooney.

Regional professionals William Featherstone (Ringway), Tom Boys (Royal Liverpool) were also among the seven qualifiers.

Over at Mere, former Lancashire champion-turned-pro Mark Young, from Longridge, posted a one-under-par 70 to claim second spot while Morecambe amateur Thomas Winn passed the test with 71 alongside Prestbury’s James Newton.

Professional trio Josh Sims (Cadly), Scott Jackson (Disley) and Chris Sands (Heswall) also booked a trip to Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Mottram Hall assistant Sam Crowther tied third at Moortown.
