Three share lead in Leeds Cup

A TRIO of players are deadlocked one three-under-par 68 at the end of the first round of the Leeds Cup at Moortown.

And 2012 winner, Chester-based Welshman Garry Houston, with two victories under his belt this season, is ominously only one shot of the pace.

But defending champion Ben Mason, from Waterfront Golf, endured a bad day in the office as he posted a 77.

Evergreen David Shacklady is among the front-runners after stringing together five birdies and is well placed in his bid to win professional golf’s oldest trophy.

It’s the one title that’s always eluded him the man from Lancashire club Mossock Hall.

This is the 100th staging of the tournament, inaugurated in 1902, and sharing pole position with him are Disley’s Scott Jackson and EuroPro Tour player Paul Grannell, from Cheshire resort Vale Royal.

LEADING SCORES: 68 Paul Grannell (Vale Royal), Scott Jackson (Disley); David Shacklady (Mossock Hall); 69 Garry Houston (unatt), John Wells (Snainton); 70 Barry Taylor (Clarke’s Golf Centre), Jon Bevan (Rhos on Sea); 71 Chris Crowder (Lee Park), Craig Corrigan (Chilli Dip Academy)
