Flawless Hamerton claims Manchester crown

GRANT Hamerton, the joint overnight leader, pulled away from the rest of the chasing pack to win the Manchester Open at Marriott Worsley Park.

The Pike Fold professional, who once gave up the game after losing his European Tour card before being encouraged to take a club position, was Mr Consistency over the two days.

He repeated his opening 68 with a flawless round featuring birdies at the eighth, ninth and final holes for a six-under-par total to prevail by three shots.

Among the four players to share second place was PGA Cup captain Jon Bevan, from Rhos of Sea, Renishaw Park’s Mike Ramsden; Chilli Dip Academy’s Craig Corrigan, who all returned 70 and 69, and Abergele’s Stuart Runcie who posted 68 and 71.

Meanwhile, Matthew Tottey, from North Wales, heads the Michael Slater Memorial Order of Merit with two ranking events remaining.

LEADERS: 136 Grant Hamerton (Pike Fold) 68 68; 139 Jon Bevan (Rhos on Sea) 71 68, Mike Ramsden (Renishaw Park) 70 69, Craig Corrigan (Chilli Dip Academy) 70 69, Stuart Runcie (Abergele) 68 71; 140 John Wells (Snainton) 68 72.
