Myerscough students quick off the mark

MYERSCOUGH College golf students have made an impressive start to the year  with both individual and team success to add to the programme’s growing reputation.

They have qualified for next week’s national finals of the Intercollegiate Tour (ICT), fielding gross and nett with the A team winning both competitions.

The students are all on the Level 3 BTEC Golf Studies programme and in addition to team events, players compete in an individual Order of Merit, with the top ten qualifying for national finals.

Myerscough student, 18-year-old Callan Barrow, topped the Order of Merit and n joins Jack Hawksby, Ross McCarthy, Lewis Pownell, Mark Hyde and Luke Stanford in the team for the nationals, while Alex Forrest and Nicola Wainwright have qualified in the individual Order of Merit women’s competition.

Craig Lea, the head academic professional at the college, said: ‘’The team have won five out of five trophies at national and regional level so far this academic year and will be looking to add two more at the ICT Finals next week. It’s an outstanding achievement by all involved.

‘’Our regional season has come to a conclusion with some highly successful results.

‘’We have a proven track record over a number of years now of the programme here is working. I’m sure that in five years’ time we’ll have a number of players making it big.”

Earlier this year Myerscough College claimed both the boys’ and team titles at the AoC Sport Golf Open Championship at Fairmont St Andrews. It was the fourth time they were crowned national champions in the last seven years.
