Abergele back on the pro-am scene – at last!

IT’S a long time since Abergele Golf Club staged a pro-am. So long ago, in fact, that Iain Runcie says there’s never been one in the 28 years he’s been PGA professional there!

Aber1“It’s a busy club and we’ve been pushing for an event for ages but we’ve now got new people in so it’s much more pro-active,” he said.

“It’s a much better set-up and we are moving with the times. We have 70 odd juniors and a healthy, growing membership which is tremendous. We’re looking forward to our pro-am on June 29.”

The parkland course is surrounded by other regional clubs but Runcie says Abergele is in excellent condition and promised it will be “immaculate” on pro-am day.

“We don’t have a maximum number of teams in mind but if we attract 30 that would be great although we can work around whatever we get,” he added.

Abergele is regarded as one of the most picturesque courses in Wales with a magnificent backdrop of historic Gwrych Castle.

It has maintained its reputation by ensuring that innovative enhancements are made at every opportunity, evidenced by the completion of a huge project which saw construction of new greens to the latest USGA standards.

Graham Maly, secretary of PGA North who are administering the event,

commented: “This is a spectacular course and our professionals will be looking forward to playing there.”
