SHIELD OF HONOUR: The Sale players celebrate in style

SALE won the Mersey Ladies Shield at Northenden thanks to Sue Barrett and Sophia Casey, who have competed in the event for more than 30 years, when they returned a best-of-the-day 42 points  reinforced by 35 from Linda Jenkinson and Brig Elmore to put their club in an unassailable position.

The top six pairs in each teams representing five clubs were neck and neck going into the last hour with just a point separating four of them.

Didsbury moved into second place as their last pair Brenda Chadwick and Val O’Brien racked up 38 points to pull clear of Northenden and Withington.

PLACINGS:  Sale 212pts; Didsbury 205; Northenden 201; Withington 199; Chorlton 181.
