Hot-shot Dolan strolls to Cheshire title

TOM Dolan continued his impressive start to the season by winning the Cheshire County Matchplay Championship at Caldy in convincing style.

The Heswall hot-shot claimed the prestigious Henriques Trophy at Hesketh earlier this month to move into second place in the Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit. And he made short work of dispatching Styal junior Jacob Oakley 5&4 in the final.He also won his semi-final match against Cheshire Boys’ champion Rob Cull, from

Bromborough, as Oakley beat Leasowe’s Ian Hargreaves 2&1.

There were some surprises in the first round, with James Newton (Prestbury), Jon Beesley (Mere) the winner for the past  two seasons, and  Sam Prince (Northenden) who won the Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit last sesason, all making an early exit.

Meanwhile, two new senior competitions were also played at scratch and handicap levels.

County Seniors’ champion Dave Nelson (Northenden) beat Mobi Rawthore (Sale) 2&1 to set up a final against his Northenden club colleague Tim Christie who accounted for County president Roy Smethurst (Crewe) by the same score. Nelson then prevailed 2&1 against Christie.

The  Handicap trophy was won by James Holroyd (Vicars Cross) who edged home on the final green aqgainst Astbury’s Max Rogers.
