Foster in the fray in senior championship

ACCRINGTON’S Trevor Foster, who  played 108 times for Lancashire and competed in the 1988 Open at Royal Lytham, is lying joint second going into today’s  second round of the English Senior Men’s Championship at Rothley Park.

His one-under-par 70, matched by  Shropshire’s Nigel Chesters, left his three strokes adrift of Richard Latham, the former English senior men’s champion, took a step towards reclaiming his crown with a four-under 67 at Kirby Muxloe, the other host venue.

Foster, who had four birdie, including one on the last, said: “It’s nice to come here and see what I can do. I wanted to dig in and this is a nice opening round, but there’s still two rounds to go.”

Nothenden’s  David Nelson posted the second best score at Kirby Muxloe with a 72, despite a tweaked back.

He made a dramatic start when he opened with an eagle two on the first, after holing an eight-iron, and followed up with birdie three on the fourth. He is another player in good form having won the recent West of England seniors, a scratch event at Wallasey and the Cheshire senior matchplay.
