Lancs go top and Cheshire beat reigning champs

LANCASHIRE maintained their 100 per cent record in the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League when they defeated Northumberland 11-7 at Alnmouth to take pole position in the table.

They edged the foursomes by a single point then asserted their authority early in the singles by winning three of the opening four ties through Luke Kelly, Henry Tomlinson and John Carroll.

The hosts hit back to reduce the margin to one point at the mid-way stage but the Red Rose men stepped up a gear to comfortably get over the line.

Reigning champions Yorkshire came unstuck in a close encounter at Sandiway where Cheshire prevailed 10-8.

The foursomes were halved but the hosts were the quickest out of the blocks in the singles, wins by Matt Jordan, James Newton and Jon Beesley  and a Rhys Nevin Wharton half putting them in the ascendancy.

The Tykes hit back by picking up three points in four ties before former skipper David Peel and  Mike Harrington steadied the ship with anchor man Sam Prince’s half crucial in the final reckoning.

Elsewhere, Cumbria beat Durham 11-7 at Barnard Castle.
