Chorlton champs in Mersey Bowl thriller

CHORLTON won the Mersey Bowl  at Northenden by a solitary point from Didsbury in the long-running mixed pairs greensome stableford competition which attracted more than 200 entries.C And the field included two big names.

They were  Sale’s English Senior Ladies champion Cath Rawthore and the host club’s  Dave Nelson, the Cheshire Seniors strokeplay and matchplay champion who last week tied third in the English Senior Men’s Open at Kirby Muxloe and Rothley Park.

But it was Chorlton who stole the headlines when captain Geoff Sellors and partner Maggie Morgan posted an impressive 42 points to put their club into the lead.

Didsbury still had players on the course and clawed back four points only to fall one short for a tie.

Other top scorers for Chorlton were  Andy and Jane Sellors (36), Pete Tonge and Maureen Walton (36), Dave Boyle and Nicola Penty (35), Tony and Pam Draper (34), Steve Costello and Monica Parsonage (33).

Team scores: Chorlton 216, Didsbury 215, Northenden 211, Sale 205, Withington 202.
