It’s James the first again for Cheshire!

JAMES Newton captured the Cheshire Strokeplay Championships for the second time in three years at Prestbury in a tournament reduced to 36 holes after the second round was abandoned because of rain.

CHAMPION: James Newton

The host club player opened with a four-under-par 67 to lead by a shot from Caldy’s Steven Capper with Delamere Forest’s Lewis George and Newton’s clubmate Josh Garside posting 69.

Newton followed up with 69 for a 136 aggregate to finish three shots ahead of Lymm’s Matt Murray who had a best-of-the-day 68 to win the Israel Sidebottom Trophy as the runner-up.

Newton will represent Cheshire in the England County Championship at Woodhall Spa in September. And he also won the TPD Taylor Trophy as the leading Colt and helped his Prestbury team to win the team trophy and earn the right to compete in the England national finals.
