Lancashire overcome Cumbria with ease at Appleby

LANCASHIRE maintained their 100 per cent record in the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League when they defeated Cumbria 13.6-4.5 at Appleby.

After winning the foursomes 4-2 they moved up another gear in the singles, losing only one of the 12 ties and halving three as the hosts capitulated.

Most impressive performance was delivered by Lancaster’s Jack Clarkson, who dispatched Darren Whitfield 6&5, while Richie Blundell, from Hillside, overcame William Postlethwaite 5&3, Ashton-under-Lyne’s Luke Kelly matched his score against Rob Spence..

SINGLES: Waters lost to Kinnear 1h; Bowe bt Kenwright 2&1; Walker lost to Carroll 2h; Spence lost to Kelly 5&3, Whitfield lost to Clarkson 6&5; Atkinson halved with Doherty; Postlethwaite lost to Blundell 5&3; Sowerby lost to Brice 1h; Longcake halved with Cranfield; Bell halved with Winn; Kendall lost to McFerran 2&1; Thursby lost to Rooney 3&2.

Meanwhile Yorkshire, who overcame Northumberland 12-6 at Hexham, are in second place two points adrift of their Red Rose rivals while Cheshire lost their unbeaten record when they succumbed to Durham by a single point at Brancepeth Castle.

Northumberland prop up the table after losing all their matches.
