Seniors battle for glory at Formby

A strong field of international seniors are  competing in the first round of the Seniors’  Amateur Championship  at Formby today.

The Americans will be looking to maintain their grip on the title at the Lancashire club where the competition was first played when it was inaurgurated by the R&A in 1969.

Last year Patrick Tallent, a 61-year-old from Virginia, emerged victorious to become the sixth successive American champion and to extend a remarkable sequence that has seen the trophy won by an American player in 15 out of the last 20 years.

The event sees 144 golfers aged 55 and over competing over three days with the top 60 and ties then progressing  to the final round.

Englishman Ian Attoe will be looking to break the trend of American winners. The 2015 champion got the event under way this morning alongside fellow countrymen Mark Logan and Keith Young.

The 2016 English Seniors Champion Richard Latham will also be expected to make a challenge for the title.
