Blackburn hits the mark

BLACKBURN Golf Club, which is backing the drive to grow the game, has won a national award from England Golf.

The 18-hole parkland course, which enjoys outstanding views of the Pennine Hills and Lancashire coast, has just received the GolfMark award.

GolfMark is an official seal of approval for clubs which successfully work to develop the game in four ways:

  • By attracting new members and encouraging existing members to play more
  • Using practical business planning to develop the club
  • Offering coaching and playing opportunities for all golfers
  • Ensuring safeguarding policies are in place

The club launched a special initiative last year with the ambition of ‘being as good a golf club as it could possibly be’.

This included a revision of its annual membership pricing to help attract new members and encourage greater participation in golf.

This proved a huge success with the club recruiting 100 new members during a 12-month period.

In order to continue to grow, that pricing offer is to be extended throughout the 2017/18 season.

This includes an offer to any member that if they invite a friend, colleague, neighbour or family member to join them at Blackburn GC both parties can play unlimited golf seven days a week – including in all competitions – for less than £1.40 per day each.

As a result of the club demonstrating its progressive vision, it has secured funding from Sport England and The National Lottery to construct a Golf

Development Centre where those who wish to ‘give golf a try’ can learn the basics of the sport before moving on to the full 18-hole course.

The club also launched a drive to attract more younger players, with free membership for any junior wanting to give golf a go, which resulted in more than 60 junior members.

As part of the “Get into Golf” project, the club also offered free membership to all ladies who had attended workshops.

Janet Hartley, Chair of Marketing, who led the club’s push to achieve GolfMark, said: “Blackburn GC is a great club, it’s very friendly, welcoming and forward-thinking. This award helps us to spread that message and to tell people that children are safe and secure here and that we understand about beginner golfers.”

The award was presented to Captain, Nigel Whalley, Janet Hartley and Stephen Matthews (Hon Treasurer) by Adam McAlister, England Golf’s County Development Officer for the Lancashire Golf Development Group.

Adam said: “I’m delighted that Blackburn Golf Club has achieved GolfMark and that efforts to grow the game can be nationally recognised.”

The GolfMark award was developed by England Golf and also integrates Sport England’s Clubmark award – a national standard for quality sports clubs recognised across the country.

GolfMark brings a number of benefits to clubs including raising awareness, access to funding, business and marketing support and training opportunities for staff and volunteers. To find out more visit
