Lancs lads battle to retain Four Counties crown

LANCASHIRE will to defend their Four Counties title with a team packed with up-and-coming talent when the three-day competition starts at Shifnal Golf Club tomorrow, facing Cheshire, Nottinghamshire, and Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Harvey Talarczyk, from Royal Lytham & St Annes, is the only player who featured in last year’s line-up.

Royal Birkdale’s Greg Holmes makes his debut on the back of an impressive showing for the Southport and District GA against the Rest of Lancs at Formby when he won his singles match by one hole against Manchester’s Joe Brice

The team is without plus two ranked Luke Kelly (Ashton under Lyne), who played for the Rest of Lancs after breaking into the senior team during 2016, because he is competing in the McEvoy Trophy.

Lancashire Boys’ captain Neil Dalton is hopeful his newcomers can meet the challenge. He said: “While we have a young and inexperienced team of good golfers, I am confident that they will produce performances that will honour Lancashire and themselves and give us every chance to retain the Four Counties trophy.

“These are exciting times for boys golf in Lancashire. The county union is providing many coaching opportunities for boys of all abilities to improve their golf through initiatives such as the Under 14 Development Programme, 14-18 County Academy Programme and the Elite Squads.

“All of the team involved at the Four Counties have received coaching provided by Lancashire over several years.”

He added: “We will have two pairs of brothers playing for the Boys U18 team, James and George Holland and Louis and Harvey Talarczyk. They will form the nucleus of a strong team that will be difficult to beat in their matches against Yorkshire, Cheshire, and Berks, Bucks and Oxon.”
