Crowther wins Welsh senior title

ROYAL Lytham’s Ian Crowther crossed the winning line with a one-shot victory in the Welsh open senior championship at Maesdu.

He birdied two of the last three holes to secure the title, finishing ahead of England senior team-mate Mark Stones (Essex). Ian Attoe (Surrey) – the 2015 English senior champion – was third.

Crowther becomes the third Englishman to win a Welsh title this season, following Max Martin of Warwickshire who is the youths’ champion, and Gian-Marco Petrozzi of Staffordshire, the open strokeplay winner.

Crowther has been knocking on the door of a big win, having finished runner-up in Spain and third in Portugal. “I had a bit of momentum going and to be Welsh open senior champion is a dream come true. I’m over the moon, absolutely delighted,” he said.

Crowther beat par twice in the championship with rounds of 71 and 70 sandwiching 78 for a three-over total. Weather conditions were challenging at the tournament with strong winds and rain squalls making it tough for the players.

“I wasn’t really thinking about getting under par. I was just playing every hole as it came, sticking the best score down and moving on. You were really trying to get back to the club house and hang on to whatever you had got out there.”

Crowther played in the England teams which won the 2016 Senior Home Internationals and took the bronze medal at the European senior men’s team championship. He was also in the Lancashire team which won the English senior men’s county championship.
