Lancs gain first point after tie with Cheshire

LANCASHIRE picked up their first point of the season in the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League after sharing the spoils with Cheshire at Bramall Park.

They edged the foursomes by one point, brothers Sean and Ciaran Doherty putting their first one on the board as they overcame Jack Brooks and Rhys Nevin-Warton 3&2 following a one hole defeat for Sean Towndrow and Richie Blundell who succumbed to Lewis George and Chris Chilton.

The hosts lost the next two matches, Dominic Barnes and Mike Harrington going down 2&1 against John Carroll and Joe Brice then Cameron Massey and Jacob Oakley were beaten on the last hole by Ian Kenwright and Reece Cranfield.

The final match between David Peel and Sam Turner Anthony Stirling and Paul McFerran was halved.

It was nip and tuck in the singles, Cheshire winning three off the opening games with one match halved before Lancashire settled for a tie after Mike Harrington despatched Mark Hyde 2&1 in the final pairing.

Kenwright eclipsed Sam Turner 7&5 and Brice beat Brooks 6&5 as the Red Rose top scorers while Cheshire’s Oakley overcame McFerran by latter margin.


STANDINGS: Yorks 6pts; Northumberland 4, Cumbria 4. Cheshire 3, Lancashire 1, Durham 0.
